A history of the game from the marshes of Queerditch to the modern professional leagues, borrowed from the Hogwarts library and never quite returned on time.

The charm of the real edition is a design decision rather than a literary one. Fantastic Beasts was printed as Harry’s personal copy — scribbled in, owned, private. Quidditch Through the Ages was printed as a library copy, with the stamp, the due dates, and Madam Pince’s terrifying admonitions to anyone who might consider tearing a page.

Which means that if you own both, you own two books from the same fictional school with completely different provenance, and the difference is legible on the object. That is a level of catalogue-thinking that most publishers never attempt, and it is exactly the sensibility this library is trying to reward.

The in-world book is also doing quiet structural work in the first novel. Rowling needed to teach the reader an invented sport, fast, without stopping the plot to explain it. So she has Harry borrow a history book and read it in bed the night before his first match — nervous, unable to sleep, cramming. The exposition arrives as characterisation.

On the readability rating. Yes. Eighty pages, in print, and mercifully short on the Bludger-related fatality statistics.

In-world history

Whisp is a noted Quidditch authority who divides his time between his home in Nottinghamshire and wherever the Wigtown Wanderers are playing. The Hogwarts copy passed through a great many hands; the real-world facsimile records Madam Pince's warnings to borrowers on the flyleaf.

Why it matters

The book Harry reads the night before his first match. Its real-world edition carries a Hogwarts library stamp and a set of borrower's dates, which makes it one of the very few published books that is also a stage prop.
