The Keeper of Sheep
also known as O Guardador de Rebanhos
Alberto Caeiro
The poems of a shepherd who does not believe in hidden meanings — written by a Lisbon clerk who needed a master that was not himself.
Menard wanted to arrive at the Quixote. Pessoa wanted to arrive at a man who had never read it.
Caeiro is the shepherd who looks at a flower and refuses to call it a flower if the word would add a thing. The poems are naive on purpose, which is a Lisbon sophistication. Pessoa, who was never naive, needed a Master whose only doctrine was attention. He wrote the doctrine in a day, dated a life around it, and then spent years being Reis and Campos in order to have someone to be taught by.
The rating follows Shade, not Trout. You can buy The Keeper of Sheep. The man who kept the sheep remains a signature. Farmer finished a Kilgore Trout novel and annoyed Vonnegut. Pessoa finished Caeiro and became a literature. This catalogue exists to hold that distinction without flattening it into “real-world editions exist.”
On the readability rating. Yes — of the poems. Of Caeiro, who died in 1915 having never been, we have the usual heteronym ration, which is a biography Pessoa filed in a trunk.
In-world history
On 8 March 1914, Pessoa said, he wrote some thirty poems at a stroke in the voice of a man who sees only what is there. Caeiro, born in 1889, dies in 1915 of tuberculosis, having taught the other heteronyms how not to think. The odes of Reis and the shouts of Campos are commentaries. Saramago later put Reis on the streets of Lisbon in the year of his death, still reading. The Keeper of Sheep is in print, as Pessoa, as Caeiro, and as a problem of the same family as Pale Fire — except that here the commentator is also the poet, under other names.
Why it matters
Pessoa did not review an imaginary book. He became its author, lived next door to him, and let Ricardo Reis and Álvaro de Campos call him Master. The poems exist. Caeiro does not. Both facts are the entry.

Editions in our world
- O Guardador de Rebanhos, Alberto Caeiro / Fernando Pessoa The poems are real and have been in Portuguese books for a century. Caeiro remains a heteronym. Adjacent to Shade's Pale Fire, with the difference that Pessoa never pretended the shepherd had a street address in New Wye.
