The Fictions of Calvino · Interrupted novel
If on a winter's night a traveler
also known as Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore
Various; the first is attributed, inside the frame, to Italo Calvino
A novel that begins, breaks off, and is replaced by another novel that begins and breaks off — ten times — while the Reader tries to find a complete copy of the book in his hands.
Borges reviews imaginary books. Calvino interrupts them.
You — the second person is not a flourish; it is the protagonist — buy a novel. It is this novel. After a chapter of a traveler waiting at a station, the text breaks off. The bookshop offers a replacement, which turns out to be a different book that also breaks off. Cimmerian novels, Japanese eroticism, a Latin American dictatorship, a detective story: ten beginnings, ten genres, ten authors who do not exist, and no endings except the outer one, which is the Reader finding the Other Reader and closing the cover.
The theft this performs is precise. Most books-within-books are objects the characters discuss. These are objects you cannot finish, which is a different and meaner magic than the Book of Sand’s. There the page cannot be found twice. Here the page is found once, with pleasure, and then permanently withheld. Calvino is making a catalogue of appetite.
It is also, not accidentally, a catalogue of twentieth-century fiction. Each inner novel is a pastiche good enough to grieve.
On the readability rating. Ten first chapters, given in full, which is a great deal of a book that was designed never to have a second. The continuations remain, by construction, unwritten.
From the book
You are about to begin reading Italo Calvino's new novel, If on a winter's night a traveler. Opening sentence, If on a winter's night a traveler, 1979
In-world history
The Reader buys what appears to be a new Calvino. A binding error (or a translator's fraud, or a conspiracy of counterfeiters — the explanation keeps changing) has mixed the signatures. Each attempt to obtain the continuation produces a different first chapter, in a different genre, by a different invented author, all of them unfinished.
Why it matters
Calvino's machine for making the act of reading the plot. Every book in this library is a book inside a book. This one is a book inside a book inside a book, and it keeps substituting the inner one so that desire itself becomes the narrative.
